本片讲述的是民国初年，上海风云人物永贞去上海之前发生的一段永贞之父为了守护刀谱和宝藏的秘密，最后惨死在土匪手下，失去父亲的永贞不得不和母亲一起逃亡所展开的故事。。故事起于神话，火龙神投胎于朱家，家人取名重八，即是后来的朱元璋，千年龟转世为陈友谅，两人都爱上了小师妹佩瑶。佩瑶虽心系重八，但是却因为中了陈友谅的计谋而嫁给了他。而重八邂逅了元朝的明霞郡主，郡主对他一往情深两人真心相爱了，但却由于身份的悬殊而不能在一起。朱重八遇到了马秀英，依靠马家军的力量与陈友谅的队伍共同抗击元朝残余势力。最后靠着身边的大将徐达、常遇春的帮助，朱重八取得了最后胜利，赢迎娶了马秀英，而明霞郡主诞下了两人的孩子后便离开了中原，有情人不得长相厮守。。We take our liberties for granted.
